How to Cultivate Your Inner Peace Within the Noise

Inner peace isn’t just something you strive to achieve, it’s a way of life you cultivate for yourself.

By cutting out the chaos in your life you can bring yourself to a place of balance, peace, calm, and compassionate acceptance. It’s not as hard as you think, and it starts with noticing and tweaking little, everyday habits.

The more you can catch yourself in an unconscious act, you bring it to light. When you are aware of the pattern, the acknowledgement and recognition start the healing process. Inner peace comes from a place of deep honesty with yourself and the ability to own your triggers. It requires self reflection and emotional regulation, along with a willingness to let everything (and everyone) be as it is.

Here are three ways to cut out the chaos and start expanding your inner peace.

Notice Your Own Noise

What is playing on repeat all day long in your head?

Are you ruminating over something that happened recently that upset you? Are you worrying about the future? If you’re like me, might you be trying to control a situation you have no control over?

All this distortion we clutter ourselves with keeps us locked in loop cycles of self-destruction. This is the noise and chaos we create for ourselves that we call “being stuck”. We’re recreating the same old stories by reinforcing our thoughts and behaviors on the regular, most of the time without even knowing.

When we can notice the patterns, thoughts, words, actions, and feelings, we can begin to rewrite the story. But you can’t fix a problem that you don’t know is there, which is why self-reflection is key in cultivating inner peace.

Once you have awareness of what’s keeping you in a state of chaos, you know what you don’t want. That leads you to know what you do want. Knowing what you do want has a powerful attraction force, and by focusing on what you want (peace, perhaps?) you turn your attention to bringing it in.

Remember, focusing on what you don’t want only brings more of it because you’re focused on it. By noticing when you’re falling into your old patterns of noise, catch yourself and turn your focus to creating peace.

Perhaps a mantra like “My inner peace is unshakable” or “Everyday I cultivate more peace” can help you anchor in the energy of a calm, peaceful state of being.

Regulate Your Nervous System

Is your body at peace or does your system get flooded at the first sight of conflict?

Building your inner peace muscle is going to require you to notice your feelings and bodily reactions. You can’t be at peace with your triggers if your body is still responding from the emotional imprint of the past experience. And if you’re reactive, you’re operating from that old emotional memory.

Begin regulating your nervous system with breathwork. Even just a few deep breaths (especially in the moment) can bring your body back to a place of balance. Inner peace is the result of a regulated nervous system because you aren’t reactive to your triggers anymore.

This doesn’t mean you don’t have triggers or get triggered in life, it just means that you respond differently to them. You don’t let them and your autopilot knee-jerk reactions run the show. You accept and notice you’re feeling a certain way, and you respond to it from a place of neutrality and curiosity. You let it move through you without it disrupting your life.

A regulated nervous system allows you to handle situations that in the past would have caused you to react in perhaps an explosive or self-sabotaging way with discernment, compassion, and understanding.

Release the emotional attachments and stories associated with your triggers. This means notice how you feel when in a situation or when you think of a past experience that was emotional.

How does your physical body feel? This is your nervous system remembering the emotional imprint of a subconscious belief associated with a similar experience from the past. Sit with these emotions (sometimes it’s really difficult, but it’s always worth it) and let them move through you. Let your nervous system know it’s safe. Perhaps do some inner child work too.

Create A Peaceful Environment

Inner peace and outer peace are connected. When your outer environment is cluttered, chaotic, or unhealthy, your inner environment suffers a bit too.

When manifesting, your inner world must feel more real than your outer world. However, your outer world needs to reflect your desires as much as you can make it. Then, you let the universe take care of the rest.

Create as much outer peace as you can to support your endeavor of inner peace.

Let go of relationships and people that drain your energy or bring drama into your life. If your job is sucking the life out of you, maybe it’s time to look for something else. Clean your space if it’s cluttered, even if you only start with a corner. It all counts.

Yes, sometimes it’s a lot of work to clean up your environment, but it’s always worth it. Even letting go of things you love (and are attached to) is hard, but it’s necessary. You can’t grow in your old ways. If you want inner peace, you have to do everything you can to build space for it.

What does peace look like for you? What’s your capacity for inner peace right now? How can you cultivate more peace in your life starting today?

One of my favorite ways to create a peaceful environment is to meditate. I have a special spot that is peaceful amidst the chaos around me, and even within that small space, when I sit and meditate, the peace is so satisfying.

Feel that once, and your body will remember it. Aim to bring that feeling back as much as you can. Practice meditation and consciously creating peace in both your inner and outer environments.

Inner Peace is an Inside Job

Just like happiness is your responsibility, inner peace is your job too. Don’t expect others to bend to your will. When you decide to ditch the drama because your peace is more important, you’ll lose some people who only want to participate in chaos.

Don’t take it personally, though. It’s only a reflection of how far they are willing to meet themselves. Creating a world of inner peace forces you to face your fears, demons, and emotions. Not everyone is willing to do that. Respect and accept where others are at, and stay focused on what’s right for you.

Inner peace takes courage and consistent reinforcement. No matter what distractions pull you away, you can always find your way back when you want to. Make the conscious choice to practice the strategies above and you will start seeing results within no time.
